This course is delivered by Dr. Candice Monson, one of the co-authors of Cognitive Processing Therapy.
Course overview
Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT) is a first-line, evidence-based treatment for posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), recommended in clinical practice guidelines worldwide. But what exactly is CPT, how does it work, and what does delivering CPT look like in real-world clinical practice?

Get to Know CPT is a 1.5-hour introductory course designed for mental health professionals who want to understand the fundamentals of Cognitive Processing Therapy before deciding whether to pursue formal CPT training.

What you are going to learn

Agenda

This engaging introduction provided by a co-author of the treatment explores the theory underlying CPT, the role of emotions in trauma processing and the impact of trauma on people's narratives and belief structures. Participants will be introduced to the structure and flow of CPT, including how clinicians use Socratic Dialogue, amplification of specific emotions, and other strategies to help clients examine and modify unhelpful trauma-related beliefs.

Through examples and discussion, participants will gain insight into what makes CPT distinct from other trauma-focused approaches, what treatment looks like in practice, and how CPT can be applied with clients experiencing PTSD and other clinical problems that trauma can cause.

This course is an introduction to CPT and is not a substitute for formal CPT foundational training or clinical consultation. For clinicians interested in becoming fully trained and credential in CPT, this course provides a starting point for exploring the approach and learning about the next steps toward formal training.

Learning Objectives:

  • Describe the core principles and theoretical foundations of Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT) and how they inform the treatment of PTSD.
  • Explain how trauma-related beliefs and cognitive processes contribute to the development and maintenance of PTSD symptoms.
  • Convey the role of emotions in trauma processing and what to do with different types of emotions.
  • Identify the key components and general structure of CPT.
  • Describe the role of Socratic Dialogue in helping clients examine trauma-related beliefs.
  • Differentiate CPT from other approaches to trauma-focused treatment and identify characteristics that make CPT a distinct evidence-based intervention.
  • Recognize the potential benefits and challenges of implementing CPT in clinical practice, including considerations for working with clients with complex presentations.
  • Identify the next steps for clinicians interested in pursuing formal CPT training and becoming credentialed in it.
