What you are going to learn

Agenda

Nightmares are distressing dreams that usually result in sudden awakenings with recall of distressing content, and impact overall sleep quality. They can be related to other mental health conditions (e.g., PTSD, depression, anxiety), other sleep disorders (e.g., insomnia, OSA), or a standalone problem. The clinical management of nightmares is guided by evidence-based strategies to alleviate their frequency and intensity, improving the individual's quality of life.

In this introduction to nightmare treatment, we will briefly explore assessment, diagnosis of nightmares, before discussing guideline-concordant care. CBT-N includes evidence-based techniques that are easy to understand and implement. An overview of the three primary interventions will be provided, including:

Imagery Rehearsal Therapy (IRT)
Exposure, Relaxation, and Rescripting Therapy (ERRT)
Lucid Dreaming Therapy (LDT)

Learning Objectives:

  • Describe the components of evidence-based interventions for nightmares.
  • Identify when CBT-N might be offered as part of shared decision making.
